Our second stage on the tour took us to the car park of Star and Shadow Cinema, Shieldfield, Newcastle. The S&S cinema screen shares the same wall as the car park, and it has often been a dream of mine to build a connection between the two spaces, one enclosed and inside, the other exposed to the elements and impossible to completely black out. In this screening, the wayfaring cinema was positioned with its back to the busy road, so the edges of the frame dissolved into the lights of passing buses and the street lamps on the other side of the road. Patates Vidues (widowed potatoes) was prepared on the fire bowl/ paella pan cooking assembly, and an urban audience with a lot of young people showed up for the screening and conversations. The post-screening chats hit a rare depth, sitting around the fire and contemplating not only Andrea’s, Damian and Delaine’s films, but also our own groupness as an audience.
